Forest structure, soil moisture, and sunlight exposure all change with slope position, aspect, and elevation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This creates <strong>stacked ecological zones<\/strong>\u2014from lowland rainforest to montane forest and, at higher elevations, alpine grasslands. Each zone supports species adapted to narrow environmental ranges, a pattern known as an <strong>elevational gradient<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mountain ridges and valleys also generate <strong>microclimates<\/strong>. Windward slopes receive heavy rainfall, while sheltered areas remain comparatively dry. These variations isolate populations across short distances, contributing to high levels of biodiversity and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/mec.17361\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">endemism <\/a><\/strong>in the tropical Andes\u2014one of the most species-rich regions on Earth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"opacity: 0;\" superb-addons-animation=\"slideInUp\" class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8cf370e7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Climate Change is Rewiring These Systems<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The same conditions that create biodiversity also make Andean ecosystems <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-024-51247-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highly sensitive<\/a><\/strong> to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As global temperatures rise, species are shifting their ranges upslope to remain within suitable climate conditions\u2014a process known as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9543992\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">range shift<\/a><\/strong>. But in mountain systems, available habitat decreases with elevation, leading to <strong>habitat compression<\/strong> and increased risk of extinction for high-elevation species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate change is also altering the formation of clouds that sustain montane forests. In many tropical mountain regions, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2425619122\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cloud base<\/a> <\/strong>is rising, reducing the frequency of immersion in moisture that defines cloud forest ecosystems. Even small shifts in cloud cover can disrupt water availability, plant growth, and species interactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, warming temperatures are <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/climateadaptationplatform.com\/how-climate-change-impacts-directly-and-cascadingly-the-andes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accelerating glacier retreat<\/a><\/strong> across the Andes. Glaciers act as natural water storage systems, releasing meltwater during dry periods.
