The P\u00e1ramo <\/strong><\/a>is a high-altitude ecosystem above the treeline. The temperature is cold, often near 0\u201310\u00b0C, and the wind is strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plants are adapted <\/strong>to these conditions. The frailejones <\/a>(Espeletia pycnophylla<\/em>) store water in their thick leaves. Cushion plants like Azorella compacta grow low to protect against frost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
