They cohabitate with animals such as llamas (<em>Lama glama<\/em>), and alpacas (<em>Vicugna pacos<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both cultures are known for practices like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ecualama.com\/blogs\/news\/the-heritage-of-ecuadorian-alpaca?srsltid=AfmBOopBoJY8oJaq0g_AIPMLHpKzf65f857NcjseOVpCfkLKFkoFq70N\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">weaving wool<\/a><\/strong> into colorful blankets using natural dyes, the annual <strong>Inti Raymi<\/strong> festival to honor the sun and mountains, and using the sacred mountains (<em><strong>apus<\/strong><\/em>) to guide daily life and water use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, Puruh\u00e1 are known for their iconic <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/happygringo.com\/blog\/panama-hats-ecuador\/#1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Panama hats<\/a><\/strong> and red ponchos.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"837\" height=\"792\" src=\"https:\/\/ayasacha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/puruhua-maop.svg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-174\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.2384519350811485;width:467px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"opacity: 0;\" superb-addons-animation=\"slideInUp\" class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"837\" height=\"792\" src=\"https:\/\/ayasacha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/kichwa-maop.svg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-172\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.0779787897691828;width:382px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Middle Montane Culture <strong>(1,500\u20133,200 m)<\/strong> &#8211; Quechua del Oriente<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While Kichwa culture can be found up and down the Andes, Kichwa del Oriente communities dominate the <strong>middle flanks<\/strong>, practicing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/beautycalypse.wordpress.com\/2019\/06\/05\/ecuadors-chakra-gardens-holy-grounds-of-biodiverse-agroforestry-farmer-owned-value-chains-interview-with-europes-first-guayusa-distributor-raquel-cayapa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chakra agriculture<\/a><\/strong>, mixing crops for food, medicine, and timber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Common crops include cacao (<em>Theobroma cacao<\/em>), banana (<em>Musa spp.<\/em>), guava (<em>Psidium guajava<\/em>), and yucca (<em>Manihot esculenta<\/em>) for <strong>food<\/strong>, and guayusa (<em>Ilex guayusa<\/em>) and ayahuasca (<em>Banisteriopsis caapi<\/em>) for <strong>medicinal and cultural<\/strong> practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These Kichwa are also proficient in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrm.org.uy\/bulletin-articles\/peoples-traditional-knowledge-embedded-in-their-territory-versus-traditional-knowledge-in-the-un\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">forest-based knowledge<\/a><\/strong> like plant identification, hunting, and medicinal uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They make dishes such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2025\/04\/a-kichwa-women-collective-uses-ecotourism-to-safeguard-ecuadors-amazon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">maito <\/a><\/strong>(fish roasted in leaves), and learn ritual <strong>songs and ceremonies<\/strong> to connect people to rivers and forest.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"opacity: 0;\" superb-addons-animation=\"slideInUp\" class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lowland Cultures (&lt;1,500m)&nbsp; &#8211; Shuar<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Shuar communities live deep in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/revista.drclas.harvard.edu\/territory-of-the-shuar-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rainforest<\/a><\/strong>. To the Shuar, the forest and its waterfalls are home, neighborhood, and school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their <a href=\"https:\/\/amazonfrontlines.org\/chronicles\/amazonian-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">diets <\/a>consist of native forest species such as camu camu (<em>Myrciaria dubia<\/em>), plantains (<em>Musa spp.<\/em>), and manioc (<em>Manihot esculenta<\/em>). <strong>Medicinal plants<\/strong> are harvested daily, and now are studied scientifically.
